Five Students accepted to Coast Guard AIM Program
Five ISTA students were accepted into this summer's Coast Guard Academy AIM Program. The five juniors, Fausto Acedo, Josue Arias, Oscar Hernandez, Bayron Lopez and Nieves Urbina will attend the program this July in New London, Connecticut. The program is designed to promote interest in engineering and technology among minoritty students. All five students are a part of the first class of "Viva Technology" students that will graduate from the ISTA academy in the spring of 2005. story...

Mr. James selected to represent So Cal Science Teachers @ AIAA Conference
ISTA Science teacher, Mr. James has been selected to represent Southern California Teachers at this year's American Institute of Astronomics and Astronautics (AIAA) conference in Fort Lauderdale Florida, July 11th through the 14th. Mr. James has been a teacher in the academy for four years. In that time Mr. James academy students have scored over 80% above the school average on their standardized test scores in science. Mr. James is the first LAUSD teacher ever chosen by the Los Angeles Chapter of the AIAA to represent them at this conference.

Mejia Reports to Great Lakes
Henry Mejia reported to Great Lakes induction center just last week June 4th. When Henry was a Junior in high school, he knew he wanted to join the Navy. Mejia knew he wasn't an excellent student academically, but he felt he had what it took to become some type of technician in the Navy. story...

Raytheon Helps ISTA student Meet Role-Model
When the first Latino, Dr. Franklin Chang Diaz, was named by NASA as a member of the Astronaut corps, a young man by the name of Jose Hernandez heard it on his radio as he was picking vegitables, and at that moment knew he had his role-model. On May 6th, 2004, while working on a school project on the internet, in her Technology class in South-Central Los Angeles, Nieves Yolanda Urbina, read about NASA's newest Mexican American astronaut, and she knew she had hers. story...


Academy Students go to NASCAR
The U.S. Coast Guard invited 120 students from the Imaging Sciences & Technology Academy to a field trip to the California Speedway in Fontana, California. On Friday April 30th, ISTA students were given the opprotunity see the science that goes into auto racing. As guests of the Coast Guard, students witnessed qualifying for Sunday's Auto Club 500. The Coast Guard has been extremely supportive of ISTA activities and students. Last year two students representing the academy attended MITE week (now known as AIM) at the Coast Guard Academy. story...
